"I realized the moment I fell into the fissure that the book would not be destroyed as I had planned. It continued falling into that starry expanse, of which I had only a fleeting glimpse. I have tried to speculate where it might have landed, but I must admit that such conjecture is futile. Still, questions about whose hands might one day hold my Myst book are unsettling to me. I know my apprehensions might never be allayed, and so I close, realizing that perhaps the ending has not yet been written."

Atrus has always been a child of two worlds - one above and one below; one living and one that might live again. A quarter D'ni by blood, he is as far as he knows the last scion of that inmitable civilization. He is a master of the Art, the D'ni craft by which books are written which serve as portals to the worlds described therein.

After his mother died giving birth to him, he was abandoned by his father Gehn to be raised by his grandmother Anna, who taught him patience, insight, and how to see things as they fit within a grander scheme. His father returned to take him to his cavern in the remains of the underground city of the D'ni and teach him the Art. Atrus admired him at first, but soon learned of his cruelty and fled, trapping him on the Age of Riven with the help of his grandmother and his wife, Catherine.

Generally speaking, Atrus is a gentle, learned, and kindhearted man who bears the burden of rebuilding a civilization, and has terrible things happen to him on a regular basis. It is entirely too much for one person to bear. Fortunately, he has always been able to rely on the kindness of Strangers.
